Nicola Green is the Director of Communications & Reputation at O2 and won the Suzy Spirit Award in 2015.
She was nominated, above all for her integrity, people skills and the dedication and passion she has for mentoring – and was the judges unanimous winner.
We caught up with her to to discuss the award, her career and what she’s been up to over the last 12 months.
What do you think is the most important quality for a nominee for the Suzy Spirit Award?
Passion that clearly demonstrates they are a force for good in the industry.
How did you feel when you found out you had been nominated?
Overwhelmed. This award was very personal to me and meant a lot.
What did your colleagues say when you’d won?
They were very touched about the award and its ethos, and as soon as I won many took to Twitter to congratulate me.
What project have you been working on this year that you’re particularly proud of?
All of our Rugby World Cup activity especially projecting the England rose onto the roof of The o2.
What’s next for you, what’s your next ambition?
We are facing exciting communication challenges over the next 6 months as we see significant amounts of consolidation in the marketplace. I look forward to leading my team through this transition.
Who inspired you to start mentoring, and where you mentored yourself?
I have been very lucky to have had some fantastic mentors, so I thought it was only fair to give something back. This quote from Kevin Spacey has always resonated with me:
“If you’re lucky enough to do well, it’s your responsibility to send the elevator back down.”
What are your 5 golden roles of being good mentor?
1. Set boundaries
2. Be open
3. Ask questions rather that offer advice
4. Always offer the bigger picture
5. Be available when needed
How do you know that you’re a good mentor– what does success look like?
It will be a relationship that will grow and flourish.
How do you fit your day job around mentoring?
Plan your day and ensure you schedule set pieces that can be changed, but at least you have them in the diary.
If we asked your team to describe you in 5 words, what would they be?
Loyal, dedicated, impassioned, tenacious and fun.
What’s the most memorable moment in your career to date?
Sitting on the front row of BAFTAs when I worked for Orange.
If you could talk to your 20 year old self starting your career, what life lessons would you give?
Don’t worry about things you can’t control.
